Skill level

Hagenhuset patterns are divided into skill levels from 1 to 5, to help knitters choose a project suitable for their level of experience.

All patterns contain video tutorials showing the techniques, provided on each pattern page at the website.

In level 1 and 2 you will also find patterns that uses slightly more advanced techniques, with suggestions for replacing them with en easier technique. That gives you a possibility to use an easy technique, or to learn a new skill.


1  ◉ – BEGINNER
Patterns in this category are suitable for a beginner knitter, who grasps the most basic stitches and techniques.

Examples of techniques used in this category: long tail cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, increase, decrease, yarn over, basic bind off.


2  ◉ ◉  – ADVANCED BEGINNER
These patterns suits a knitter who easily handles the standard stitches, and are ready to learn more.

Examples of techniques used in this category, above the techniques in the previous category: German twisted cast on, directional increases and decreases, working in the round (using Magic loop or double-pointed needles), slipping stitches, working stripes, picking up stitches, working a folded edge, understanding the basics of gauge.


3  ◉ ◉ ◉ – INTERMEDIATE
These patterns suits a knitter who starts to feel really confident with knitting and are able to work different techniques on the same row (like increasing for raglan and working short rows).

Examples of techniques used in this category, above the techniques in the previous categories: tubular (Italian) cast-on and bind-off, Judy’s magic cast on, provisional cast on, short rows, increasing/decreasing on both the right side and the wrong side of the work, I-cord, structure patterns, simple brioche, simple colourwork, elements of double knitting, Kitchener stitch, simple finishing techniques.


4  ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ – EXPERIENCED 
Patterns in this category reguire keeping an overview of a pattern and handling several instructions at the same time.

Examples of techniques used in this category, above the techniques in the previous categories: brioche with shaping, colourwork (stranded knitting), more advanced texture patterns, sewing a zipper, more advanced finishing techniques.


5  ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ – ADVANCED 
These patterns are designed for experienced and confident knitters and include many different challenging details and techniques.

Examples of techniques used in this category, above the techniques in the previous categories: advanced double knitting with buttonholes, advanced finishing techniques.
