Askim
Askim
Askim - ribbed socks with a modified afterthought heel.
Askim socks are worked in the round from the cuff down with a modified afterthought heel. The modified heel creates a gusset for a better fit and allows you to try the sock on during knitting.
The socks start with a cuff worked in 1x1 ribbing, the leg is then worked in 3x1 ribbing.
Stitches are then placed on hold and new stitches for the sole are casted on using a provisional crochet CO. The gusset decreases are worked at the sides, and then the foot is worked straight to the toes, where decreases are made on each side. After the toe decreases, the stitches are grafted using Kitchener stitch.
The held stitches and the stitches from the provisional CO are then worked in the round and decreased to shape the heel.
SIZES: 1, (2, 3), 4, [5, 6].
To fit foot circumference: 18.1, (19.4, 20.6), 22, [23.2, 24.6] cm.
Finished sock circumference: 15.1, (16.2, 17.2), 18.3, [19.4, 20.5] cm.
GAUGE: 40 sts & 40 rnds = 10 cm, worked in the round in 3x1 ribbing, measured unstretched, after blocking.
YARN: Fingering weight sock yarn, approx. 400m/100g.
The yardage used depends on chosen size and desired length. Size 1–2, foot length 21–24 cm: 200 m, size 3–5, foot length 23–26 cm: 400 m, size 6, foot length 25–28 cm: 500 m.
NEEDLES & CROCHET HOOK: 2.25 mm (US1) circular needles 80–100 cm for Magic Loop, or a set of double pointed needles – or a needle size that gives the gauge.
Crochet hook approx. 2.5 mm (B–C) for the provisional CO.
NOTIONS: Stitch markers, stitch holder, tapestry needle, scrap yarn in the same weight but in a contrasting colour.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE SIZE: Measure the circumference of the foot at its widest part, close to your toes.
If you are between sizes, choose a smaller size for a tighter fit (recommended for adults), or a larger size for more room to grow (recommended if you knit the socks for a child).
The finished sock will be slightly smaller than the foot circumference (intended to be worn with approx. 3–4 cm of negative ease).
Note that stitch gauge differences will affect the finished sock circumference – check your gauge and adjust the needle size if necessary.
The length is adaptable. Note that the row gauge affects the length of the sock.
