Stella - a christmas hat in brioche pattern

SIZES
1, (2, 3, 4).
To fit head circumference: 38-43, (43-49, 49-55, 55-60) cm.
Approx. age: 2–6 months, (6–18 months, 18 months – 9 yrs, 9 yrs – adult).

GAUGE
26 sts & 32 rnds = 10 cm, worked in the round on the smaller needles in 1x1 rib with yarn C & D, unstretched, after blocking.

YARN
Yarn A: Isager Tvinni, colour 32S, red: 180, (210, 240, 270) m.
Yarn B: Isager Silk Mohair, colour 32, red: 180, (210, 240, 270) m.
Yarn C: Filcolana Tilia, colour 100, white: 25, (30, 40, 45) m.
Yarn D: Sandnes Double Sunday, colour 1012, off white: 80, (90, 100, 110) m.

YARN SUBSTITUTES
Yarn A: wool or wool blend, approx. 500m/100g, for example Sandnes Sunday, Isager Alpaca 2.
Yarn B & C: silk mohair or similar, approx. 212m/25g, for example Sandnes Tynn Silk Mohair, Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair, CaMaRose Midnatssol, Rauma Plum.
Yarn D: wool, approx. 250m/100g, for example De Rerum Natura Gilliatt, Järbo Alpe, Sandnes Smart.

Yarn A & B (the body of the hat) may be replaced with one strand of yarn in DK weight (approx. 250m/100g).
Yarn D (brim) should be soft and elastic, with good recovery. I highly recommend choosing plied yarn in 100% wool.

NEEDLES
3 mm (US2.5) circ. needles 40 cm/16” for ribbing.
4 mm (US6) circ. needles (40 cm/16”) and a set of DPNs (or Magic Loop) for brioche.

NOTIONS
Stitch marker, tapestry needle, pompom maker (Ø 45 mm), scissors, steamer and tongs for the pompom.

CONSTRUCTION
The hat is worked top down, in the round. The body of the hat is worked in brioche pattern with two strands held together (yarn A & B). The brim is worked in 1x1 rib, fold double and sewn in place. Outside of the brim is worked with two strands held together (yarn C & D), inside of the brim is worked with one strand only (yarn D). The pompom is made using yarn D.
