NEEDLES & CROCHET HOOK
2.5 mm (US1.5) for stockinette stitch – circular needles 80–100 cm for Magic Loop, or a set of double pointed needles.
2 mm (US0) for ribbing – circular needles 80–100 cm for Magic Loop, or a set of double pointed needles.
Crochet hook approx. 2.5–3 mm (C), used for the provisional CO.
Stitch markers, stitch holder, tapestry needle, scrap yarn in the same weight but contrasting colour.
The socks are worked in the round from the cuff down, with a modified afterthought heel. The modified heel creates a gusset for a better fit and allows you to try the sock during knitting.
The socks start with a ribbed cuff, the leg is then worked in stockinette stitch.
Half of the stitches are then placed on hold and new stitches for the sole are casted on using a provisional crochet CO. The gusset decreases are worked at the sides, and then the foot is worked straight to the toes, where decreases are once again made on each side. After the toe decreases, the stitches are grafted using Kitchener stitch.
The held stitches and the stitches from the provisional CO are then worked in the round and decreased to shape the heel.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE SIZE
Measure the circumference of the foot at its largest part, right above your toes.
If you are between sizes, choose a smaller size for a tighter fit (recommended for adults), or a larger size for more room to grow (recommended if you knit the socks for a child).
The finished sock will be slightly smaller than the foot circumference (intended to be worn with approx. 1 cm of negative ease).
Note that gauge differences will affect the finished sock circumference, check your gauge, and adjust the needle size if necessary.
The length is adaptable.
